Words are powerful. With them we make friends and influence people. With them we communicate love, concern, compassion, fear, and a host of other feelings. However we rarely think twice about the words we chose to use and how they affect others. In James 5:12 we are told to let our yes be yes and our no, no.
James is telling us to be people of our word. In fact he begins the verse with these words, "above all else". He's saying the integrity of our words is the most crucial thing in our relationship with Christ. Because as servants of Christ our witness is enhanced or reduced by the words we use. When we say things without thinking and then don't follow through we communicate that we are not to be trusted. Words are powerful. they reveal how trustworthy we are.
As children we use to say, " I cross my heart and hope to die". Remember how we made such vows to try and say we will do it you can count on it. However if we need to rely on vows to be believed, what is it saying about how trustworthy we are. Words are powerful.
With words we build up or tear down. With words we develop friendships or loose them. Words are powerful. Have you ever said something and then realized you had put your foot in your mouth? We all make mistakes with our words.
Today try listening to yourself and see how your words match up to your actions. Let's work on our words choices so that our witness for Jesus will be trustworthy and considered by everyone we come in contact with. Listen to the words you use each day they are powerful.
